This collective is the winner of the award given by the cult radio station and magazine HOT 97, one of the leaders in promoting hip-hop. This outlet has been at the forefront of hip-hop culture since 1992 – not only in New York but worldwide. In anticipation of the global celebration of 50 years of hip-hop, HOT 97 magazine has just announced Wu-Tang Clan as the first recipient of the “Hip Hop Impact” award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to hip-hop and an enormous influence on music and culture in general.
HOT 97 emphasized that there was no one more deserving of this honor.
“RZA and the rest of the Wu have blazed a trail for entertainers in music, film and the arts, all while creating one of the most prolific music catalogues in hip-hop history. We congratulate and celebrate them today and always,” said Bradford Tobin, President, Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel.
In acceptance of the award, RZA said it felt great to be recognized for his work and added: “To think 30 years ago when I was sitting there playing with SP-1200 or playing with the ASR-10 that I would create a sound that would not only inspire my generation but inspired future generations. And I thank HOT 97 for recognizing that.”
Since their first album, Wu-Tang Clan positioned themselves as the standard for hip-hop and a blueprint for musical careers, from their first shows in Texas when they were paid with a counterfeit $100 bill to selling out the biggest stadiums worldwide. They have released eight albums and sold over 40 million copies, creating an opus that has redefined hip-hop as a genre.
This is just one of the accolades that Wu-Tang Clan have received in their career. Due to their enormous influence, two street corners in New York are named after them, while not one but two of their albums are archived in the US Library of Congress.
The legendary Wu-Tang Clan, led by the revolutionary, producer and genius RZA, who has been inspiring musicians and other artists around the world for decades, will perform on the Gorki List Main Stage of the EXIT festival, on Sunday, July 9, at a grand celebration of 50 years of hip-hop, a culture they helped create and will forever have an impact on.
